The United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) campus at Carlyle

The USPTO has moved most of its staff, contractors, and services from the Crystal City campus in Arlington, Northern Virginia to the newly built Carlyle campus located in Alexandria, Northern Virginia, about 20 minutes drive west of DC Airport (National Reagan Airport).

The USPTO's Carlyle campus is bounded on the south by Eisenhower Avenue , on the west by Elizabeth Lane , on the east by John Carlyle Street , and on the north by Jamieson Avenue.

The Carlyle campus comprises five main buildings (four 10-story buildings and one 16-story building), two townhouse-style office buildings (Elizabeth and Carlyle Townhouses located along Elizabeth Lane and John Carlyle Street, respectively) and two structured car parks, Carlyle West and Carlyle East located adjacent to, but hidden by, the Elizabeth Lane and John Carlyle Street townhouse office complexes, respectively. The Carlyle East parking lot is open to the public with about 1,500 parking places and a scheduled closing time of 10.30 PM weekdays.

The five main buildings are arranged in a u-shaped pattern with a complementary open-ended u-shaped courtyard in the center – see attached map of the Carlyle campus. The five main buildings are, clockwise from the northeast part of the campus: Remsen, Jefferson, Madison, Knox, and Randolph. The courtyard includes two parallel lines of translucent columns, which at night offer an interesting, if not dazzling, coordinated colored light display likened by some observers to the computer controlled fountain display operated by the Bellagio Hotel on the Vegas strip.

The Carlyle campus can accommodate about 8,000 of USPTO's 8,800 employees and contractors. The USPTO plans to move about 100 employees still located at the Crystal City campus to its Carlyle campus and anticipates hiring 650 new employees during fiscal year 2006. To help accommodate the anticipated staff, the USPTO plans to allow some of its employees to work from home for several days a week and may acquire additional leased space to accommodate its growing workforce.

Madison Building : a 16-story building named for James Madison, the fourth President, the Madison Building houses the patent and trademark search rooms, and is distinguishable from the other four buildings by its location at the southern apex of the u-shaped Carlyle campus and is further distinguished by its central Atrium some 16 floors high;

Randolph Building : another 10-story building named for Edmond Randolph, Attorney General under George Washington, and a member of the first Patent Board;

Knox Building : another 10-story building named for Henry Knox, Secretary of War under George Washington, and a member of the first Patent Board.
